Your December Financial Check-Up: Finding Joy Through Preparation

December 03, 2025

As 2025 draws to a close, personal finance is likely top-of-mind as it is the season for giving. Throughout our county, you can see evidence of our community spirit reflected everywhere. Though the impulse to spend money and share gifts is wonderful, you may make your holiday even brighter by taking steps now to prepare for January. Consider it a gift to yourself of an organized and positive start to 2026, regardless of what you spend in December. Following are three do-it-yourself steps for peace of mind about your personal financial situation now and into 2026.

  1.  Maximize Retirement Savings: Whether you are employed or self-employed, check on your retirement account contributions. Talk with your financial planner or tax professional before the end of the year to discuss.
  2. Plan for "Found Money" Savings: Consider cash, gift cards, or bonuses you receive around the holidays. You should decide now what percentage of this "found money" you can immediately allocate to savings or debt payoff. These unexpected funds may power your future goals.
  3. Finalize Tax Prep: Schedule time to gather receipts, especially those related to charitable donations or business expenses. Get in front of your computer or receipt file, set a timer for 30 minutes, and enter the information into your tracking system.

When you take intentional steps with your money in December, you may find that you approach your personal financial situation differently. Plan for your success now so you may start 2026 feeling prepared for what may come.
